Pico laser delivers energy in pulses measured in trillionths of a second. Because each pulse is so brief, pigment is shattered mechanically rather than heated — and heat is exactly what triggers rebound pigmentation in brown skin. That distinction is why Pico became the standard for treating melasma and stubborn pigment on South-Asian complexions.
Pigment work is the part of our practice that demands the most patience and the most honesty. Melasma in particular is chronic and hormone-driven; it relapses. What Pico does, alongside prescription topicals and non-negotiable sun protection, is bring it down and keep it manageable.

Pre-conditioning
Where needed, topicals prepare the skin for several weeks before the first pass to reduce rebound risk.

No — and any clinic claiming a permanent cure is misleading you. Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition driven by hormones and sun. Pico plus prescription topicals and daily SPF brings it down substantially and keeps it controlled, with maintenance.
It is currently among the safest pigment lasers for Fitzpatrick III–V skin, precisely because ultra-short pulses generate very little heat. Settings still matter, and we use low-fluence toning protocols rather than aggressive single passes.
For general brightening, three to four. For melasma or deep pigment, six to eight sessions three to four weeks apart, followed by maintenance. We photograph in standardised light so progress is measured, not guessed.
Practically none for toning sessions — mild redness for a few hours. Focused spot treatment can leave small darkened flecks that lift off over a week.
They work at different levels and often together. Peels address surface pigment and texture; Pico reaches deeper dermal pigment that peels cannot. Dr. Momna will sequence them based on what your pigment actually is.
