A chemical peel is controlled exfoliation — an acid applied at a chosen strength for a chosen time to remove damaged surface layers and prompt the skin beneath to renew. Used well it is one of the most reliable tools in dermatology for acne, marks, pigment and dull texture.
Used badly it is one of the most common causes of the pigmentation we spend months correcting. Strength, acid choice and neutralising time have to be matched to your skin type, and on Fitzpatrick III–V skin the margin is narrower than most people are told. Every peel at ELAJ is prescribed after assessment, never chosen from a price list.
Assessment & prep
We confirm your skin type, current products and history, and pre-condition the skin where needed.
Degrease & protect
Skin is degreased for even penetration and sensitive areas are barrier-protected.
Timed acid application
The prescribed acid is applied in layers while your clinician watches the skin's response closely.
Neutralise & calm
The peel is neutralised at the right moment and a recovery cream plus SPF is applied.
A correctly prescribed peel will not. Pigmentation after a peel happens when the strength is too high for the skin type, the peel is not neutralised in time, or the patient goes into the sun without protection. All three are avoidable, and avoiding them is the point of a physician-led peel.
It depends on the depth. A superficial glow peel may only cause slight flaking; a deeper resurfacing peel can shed visibly for four to five days. We tell you which you are having before you book so you can plan around work or events.
Peels help melasma as part of a broader plan that includes prescription topicals and strict sun protection — not on their own. Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition and we will be straight with you about maintenance rather than promise a cure.
Only with enough lead time. We would want at least two weeks between your final peel and the event so any shedding has fully resolved. Closer than that, we would recommend a HydraFacial or the red carpet facial instead.
